Radar Stand-alone tank level monitoring

Project Summary:

Bitrez is a resin manufacturer that holds the UK’s coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. They are a design and manufacturing specialists in polymers & synthetic resins over 2 facilities in the North West of England offering an extensive range of highly innovative materials developed for a broad range of markets.

The current delivery tank of approximately 8 metres had a legacy cat and mouse type measuring device that needed maintenance and access to the top of the tank in order to verify the tonnage of raw material delivered to site. This caused inaccuracies in offload / onload discrepancies and also a Health and Safety concern over climbing ladders to access the top of the tank.

HTS Group was engaged to provide a stand alone tank level monitoring and alarm system through a non-contact level transmitter in order to provide accurate delivery information and High / Low level local alarming.

Process and conclusions:

After initial project scope and review HTS Group opted for a Krohne non-contact Rader level transmitter with HART communication to allow for EC&I commissioning. The level transmitter was to feed a local JB, designed by HTS Group with a visual level indication and incorporated level alarming signals through Relay logic.

The set points were commissioned through HART communication and a sounder beacon installed to allow site to be notified. Onsite instrument install and commissioning was undertaken by HTS Group and although internal tank reflections initially caused some intermittent alarming, after a full tank scan through the powerful HART Radar instrument using PACTware these could be irradicated
